Lawmaker Kim Jin-pyo of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea has been nominated for the post of National Assembly speaker.
Kim, a five-term lawmaker and formerly Deputy Prime Minister under the Roh Moo-hyun administration, won the DP's primary on Tuesday.
His party gets to choose the speaker because it holds more seats in the Assembly than President Yoon's People Power Party.
A vote in a plenary session, likely this week, is expected to confirm his appointment.
The term of the outgoing parliamentary speaker, Park Byeong-seug, ends on Sunday.
