U.S. to host Global COVID-19 Summit on May 12; President Yoon Suk-yeol likely to make global diplomacy debut Updated: 2022-05-11 13:33:44 KST

The U.S. is going to host a second Global COVID-19 Summit this week, with South Korea among those taking part.
The White House said Tuesday that it's co-hosting the virtual summit on Thursday, U.S. time, with Belize, Germany, Indonesia and Senegal.
The summit is widely seen as the U.S. reinforcing its leading role in countering China and Russia.
South Korea's involvement will likely be President Yoon's debut on the international stage.
Direct communication between Yoon and Biden is unlikely though.
A summit with Biden is scheduled for next weekend, though, when the U.S. president comes to Seoul.
