S. Korean gov't to provide discount coupons to 23 mil. people to boost consumption Updated: 2021-03-03 16:31:11 KST

To boost domestic consumption and revitalize demand for industries that are reeling from the pandemic, the South Korean government plans to provide more discount vouchers.
Finance Minister Hong Nam-ki at a ministerial meeting on Wednesday made the announcement saying that coupons for online purchases will be provided for industries that would normally require face-to-face interaction such as cultural events and eating in restaurants.

"With a stabilized COVID-19 situation and thorough prevention measures, discount coupons will be provided to 23 million people in order to boost demand in the service industries including culture, lodging, and dining."

There are discounts for groceries too, on farm and fishery products where customers can get up to eight U.S. dollars off when buying online.
And for restaurants, people can get eight dollars back if they have dined out five times.
They have to have spent at least 17 dollars each time on the first five meals. but the dicsount includes food ordered for delivery as well.
In the lodgings sector, 25-dollar discount will be provided for online reservations.
And for gyms, people can also get about 25 dollars back on their monthly payments.

The government is also planning to hand out four other types of vouchers.
Some one million vouchers that can be exchanged for farming products and milk will be provided for pregnant women, elementary school students and those in low income groups.
For one.eight million people in low income groups, about 90 dollars per year will be provided for leisure, tourism and cultural activities.
Also, for children, teenagers and those with disabilities in low income groups, around 70 dollars per month will be given for sports lessons.
The government is also planning to offer companies ways for their employees to receive travel benefits, too.
With about 90 dollars provided to employees going on domestic trips.
