AstraZeneca vaccines produced in S. Korea leave manufacturing plant in Andong Updated: 2021-02-25 10:08:29 KST

With a day left before South Korea's COVID-19 vaccination program begins, doses are being transported from the manufacturing plant of SK Bioscience.
The firm is a South Korean drugmaker that is producing AstraZeneca's vaccine under a partnership deal.
For more, we connect live to our Bae Eun-ji.
Eun-ji, give us more details about how the vaccine is transported.

Mark, I'm standing at the back gate of the vaccine manufacturing plant of SK Bioscience, where a truck carrying shots for 163-thousand people departed about an hour ago.
This area was under strict military and police guard.
There were personnel outside before the truck carrying the vaccines left and the truck had a heavy poilce and military escort.
Since yesterday, trucks carrying vaccines have been leaving this building in the city of Andong in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province… 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
The vaccines are transported to a logistics warehouse in Icheon City.
The shots will be temporarily stored there before being delivered to almost 2-thousand public health care centers and nursing homes across the country.

That's good to hear. Tell us more about the total amount of vaccines that particular plant will be producing for use in South Korea.

Well Mark, by Sunday more than 1.5 million doses for 785-thousand people will have been moved from here to the logistics hub through a cold chain system.
This amounts to doses for about 35-thousand more people than the government's original plan.
It aimed to deliver doses for 780-thousand people from this manufacturing plant.
Shots for 173,500 people arrived at the Icheon warehouse yesterday, and the remaining doses will be delivered today and over the next three days.
SK Bioscience will also be producing 40 million doses of Novavax's vaccine.
It signed a licensing agreement with the U.S. drugmaker last week to produce 40 million doses for South Korea.
That's all I have at this hour, but I'll be back with updates throughout the day.
Back to you, Mark.
