S. Korea reports 559 new COVID-19 cases, first time in 10 days that cases top 500 Updated: 2021-01-27 15:03:34 KST

A spike in daily coronavirus cases.
South Korea reported 559 new coronavirus patients, 516 of which were local infections.
For the first time in 10 days, the number of daily infections reached over 500, with the daily tally jumping by 210 cases in a single day.
The surge was largely due to a mass outbreak traced back to a missionary school in Daejeon, which has reported a total of 318 linked cases.
The infection spread to TCS international school in Gwangju, run by the same missionary group.
Here,.. 109 cases were reported on Wednesday.

"Cluster infections have been confirmed in Gwangju, in unauthorized facilities belonging to the IM missionary group. As related facilities are located across the country, other areas are in danger too."

In response, the government inspected some 40 related facilities.
It also ordered full-scale COVID-19 testing on 32 places run by the IM missionary group.
But concerns grow, especially as more people were out and about across the capital region over the weekend.

"Activities have rapidly increased this weekend. Movements traced increased by 12 percent compared to last weekend, and 31 percent compared to early January."

Meanwhile, the prospect of COVID-19 vaccines nears.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, during a press conference with foreign media on Wednesday, told reporters that vaccines and treatments will be available in South Korea starting from next month.

"The government aims to complete vaccination by November and develop herd immunity. Director General Jerome Kim of International vaccine institute has projected that Korea's vaccination rate will be faster than other countries despite its relatively late start."

The government will announce the details on Thursday afternoon about when and how the vaccines will be administered and how the government plans to react in the case of side effects.
