IHO agree to refer to seas by numbers: Seoul's foreign ministry Updated: 2020-11-17 10:11:56 KST

The stretch of water between South Korea and Japan will be referred to by a number, rather than being called the 'East Sea' or the 'Sea of Japan'.
Seoul's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that the International Hydrographic Organization has decided to give unique numerical identifiers to seas, instead of specific names.
The decision will be officially announced in early December.
South and North Korea say that only using the name 'Sea of Japan' is a reminder of Tokyo's past imperialism, as it was officially named when the Korean Peninsula was colonized by Japan.
