Six Russian military officers have been charged with a series of worldwide cyberattacks.
The U.S. Department of Justice said on Monday that the hackers' activities were aimed at promoting Russia's own geopolitical interests.
They include cyberattacks on the French election and the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, where Russian athletes were banned due to doping.
All of the alleged defendants are part of a Russian military agency known as the GRU.
The prosecutors say it's the same intelligence unit that interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election by hacking Democratic email accounts.
