China has reportedly held military drills near Taiwan during the visit of a top U.S. official to the self-governing island amid escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing.
The Taiwan-based Liberty Times Net newspaper reported multiple Chinese military aircraft flew near the island's airspace for about an hour on Friday morning.
This prompted Taiwanese fighter jets to be scrambled to usher them away.
The drills come as U.S. Under-secretary of State of Economic Affairs, Keith Krach visits the island.
He is meeting Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in an apparant show of U.S. support for Taipei.
