The Pentagon says the upcoming Seoul-Washington joint military drills, scheduled for later this month, are partly aimed at preparing South Korea for the transfer of operational control.
Speaking during a briefing on Thursday, a Pentagon spokesperson also explained that Washington hopes to make sure it can take necessary steps to ensure South Korea can retake OPCON in the event of war.
Seoul's defense ministry has said earlier the two allies plan to carry out a Full Operational Capability test during the upcoming exercise, after canceling a joint military drills scheduled for spring due to COVID-19.
