Diplomats from South Korea and Japan will meet in Tokyo in the coming hours to discuss a possible meeting between their foreign ministers.
Kim Jung-han, director-general for Asian and Pacific Affairs will sit down with his Japanese counterpart for the first time since Shigeki Takizaki took up the post earlier this month.
The director-general-level meeting will focus on arranging a meeting between Seoul's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and her new Japanese counterpart, Toshimitsu Motegi, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.
There had been speculations that leaders of the South Korea and Japan could meet for a bilateral summit in New York next week, but Japan's Kyodo News reported Thursday that a Moon, Abe summit will not take place this time citing a high-level Japanese government official.
