Top Korean gaming companies fostering healthy, productive E-sports stars Updated: 2019-08-14 10:03:01 KST

Korea's major E-sports firms are aiming to turn online gaming into a healthier and more productive industry.
Gen. G, one of the world's top E-Sports teams based in southern Seoul, will open an academy to nurture professional gamers.
But it won't just focus on intensive training for gaming. It will teach the U.S. high school curriculum to make sure the students excel academically, and will put a huge emphasis on their well-being.

"For teams that care about the wellness of the players, students, athletes they'll succeed and the ones that don't will fail. To me, it's part of the growth and regulation of any other industry. The ones that do it well and do it right over the long run, those will be successful. Versus the ones that only go for short wins will be unsuccessful. I think this academy program actually helps us nurture a healthier mindset and a professional mindset which allows you to become a professional gamer. Because what people do right now are go to a PC cafe and sit there for 8 hours. That's not being very productive."

The program will be based on Gen. G's training program for its world-class esports players.

"Wherever they go, we try to nurture healthy-minded team players. We provide a personal trainer for each of our players, and a sports psychologist even offering sleep therapy with a very reputable university program to ensure they are mentally and physically well."

Korea's largest mobile gaming firm Netmarble is also training high school students to become top game developers.
Their 8-month course helps students grow their ideas into actual online games, under the guidance of industry experts.

"It was great hearing some constructive criticism of our ideas for gaming content from our mentors. They gave us insights on how to take our games to the next level by making them user-friendly"

According to the culture ministry, exports by local game creators hit five.nine-two billion U.S. dollars in 2017, up 80.7 percent on-year.

"As gaming has become a sizeable piece of cultural content in many sectors, beyond just entertainment, we are also educating the students on the positive and healthy uses of gaming, along with our gaming ethics sessions to nurture responsible game developers."
