Two Koreas, UN Command hold first 3-way meeting to discuss demilitarization of JSA Updated: 2018-10-17 10:07:47 KST

The two Koreas and the United Nations Command held their first trilateral meeting on Tuesday at the Peace House on the South Korean side of Panmunjeom.
The closed-door meeting began at 10 a.m. and continued until about one fifteen in the afternoon, with nine military officials attending, three each from South Korea, North Korea and the UN Command.
According to South Korea's defense ministry, the officials discussed disarming the Joint Security Area in the inter-Korean truce village, and checked the progress of an ongoing mine-removal project in the Joint Security Area, which began on the first day of October.
They also discussed other measures to implement further demilitarizing within the JSA,.. including reducing the number of firearms and troops in the jointly patrolled area.
The two Koreas had already agreed to demilitarize the Joint Security Area, as one of the ways to turn the DMZ into a peace zone, as part of the comprehensive inter-Korean military agreement signed at last month's inter-Korean summit in Pyeongyang.
The U.S.-led UN Command has held jurisdiction over the JSA,.. since the 1953 armistice agreement.
