The standing committee of South Korea's National Security Council met for an hour at the top office this morning and discussed North Korea's pre-dawn cancellation of the high-level inter-Korean talks on Wednesday as well as its sudden departure from the latest diplomatic overture.
Our chief Blue House correspondent Moon Connyoung joins us live from the nation's top office.
So conn-young, what came out of the meeting?
Jiyoon. It was a weekly meeting of the National Security Council but the members focused on urging North Korea to faithfully follow up on the Panmunjom Declaration announced by the leaders of South and North Korea at the historic inter-Korean summit on April 27th.
The agreements, of course being steps towards denuclearization and peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula.
"Members of the NSC standing committee reaffirmed their stance that the Panmunjom Declaration reached at the April 27 inter-Korea summit must be carried out without any disruption and agreed to continue consulting with the North to hold the high-level talks at an early date.
Connyoung, North Korea has also threatened to pull out of the historic North Korea, U.S. summit set for next month. President Moon, we know, has been playing the mediator role in arranging that meeting. Any word on that?
Absolutely, Jiyoon. As crucial and important the April inter-Korean summit was to the South Korean president and his vision for peace on the Korean peninsula, the North Korea, U.S. summit is actually THE meeting where Mr. Moon has been placing his bet on in starting the denuclearization and peace building process on the peninsula.
So, yes, the top office did have a word or two on that, as well
"The members of the standing committee members will closely coordinate with the rest of the parties involved through various channels between South Korea and the U.S. as well as the two Koreas so that the upcoming North Korea-U.S. summit will be held successfully under the spirit of mutual respect."
As you can see, no drastic change of position from the Blue House from yesterday they're still keeping a cautious stance and carefully examining the situation and coordinating accordingly, Jiyoon.
