White House welcomes China's drop in trade with North Korea last year Updated: 2018-01-13 16:15:28 KST

The United States has welcomed news of China's drop in trade with North Korea, saying it will help put pressure on Kim Jong-un's regime.
This comes after Beijing released year-end customs figures on Friday, showing that imports from North Korea were down 33-percent last year, and over 80-percent in December.
In a statement, the White House said "the administration is pleased China is sharply reducing its trade with North Korea", and that it "supports the U.S.-led global effort to apply maximum pressure to end the North's illicit programs, changes its behavior and moves toward denuclearization."
However, China's exports to North Korea last year rose by eight-percent, totaling three.three billion dollars, the highest value since 2014.
