Trump, Xi agree North Korea should stop its provocative behavior Updated: 2017-08-12 14:24:08 KST

The White House says Presidents Trump and Xi spoke on the phone on Friday night, U.S. time, reiterating their commitment to solve the rising tensions on the Korean peninsula.
The two leaders agreed that North Korea must end its provocative and escalatory behavior, and they shared a mutual understanding that the recent unanimous adoption of a tough UN Security Council resolution on North Korea was an important step towards the peace and stability.
Chinese state-run television also reported that Trump and Xi reaffirmed they have common interests in maintaining peace on the Korean peninsula, agreeing that all sides should avoid rhetoric or action that would worsen tensions.
South Korea's presidential office issued a statement Saturday afternoon, saying the phone call could be a new phase in soothing security tensions on the peninsula.
The Blue House added that Seoul will closely cooperate with the U.S. and China on solving the matter.
A few hours before their talks, Trump spoke to reporters at his golf resort in New Jersey, and said South Korea doesn't need to feel overly concerned about the recent developments.

"Well, I think as far as reassurance they probably feel as reassured as they can feel. Certainly they feel more reassured with me than they do with other presidents from the past because nobody's really done the job that they're supposed to be doing."

President Trump also softened his tone toward North Korea, stressing a window of opportunity for a peaceful solution is still open.
Trump's latest comments followed his previous strong messages directed at Pyongyang, including a tweet where he said military solutions are "locked and loaded", if North Korea act unwisely.

"Hopefully it will work out. Nobody loves a peaceful solution better than President Trump, that I can tell you. Hopefully it will all work out. () We will see what happens. We think lots of good things could happen, but we could also have a bad solution. But we think lots of good things could happen."

And on the heels of slapping fresh new sanctions on the regime, the European Union will convene an emergency meeting on Monday to further discuss the issue of North Korea's threats and the ongoing crisis.
