President Moon presides over Cabinet meeting for 1st time Updated: 2017-06-27 11:55:56 KST

Let's start with the first cabinet meeting chaired by the president himself since he took office in early May.
President Moon will embark on a four-day trip to the United States tomorrow, but in the meantime, let's get a check-up on how this morning's meeting went.
And for that we have our Ji Myung-kil on the line, Myung-kil, so more nominations this morning?

Hello Daeun.
It's been forty-eight days since President Moon Jae-in was sworn into office and today he went ahead with announcing his new pick for justice minister after his first choice withdrew over ethical issues.

President Moon tapped Park Sang-ki a professor from Seoul's Yonsei University as his new justice minister.
Park is a legal expert who advocates reforming the prosecution and the judicial system.
Park also currently heads the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice an active civic organization that is pushing for fair income distribution.
President Moon also named the new chief of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission Pak Un-jong.
Park is a professor at Seoul National University and President Moon sees her as the right person to protect civil rights and root out corruption.
The job is considered a ministerial post, but unlike Cabinet posts, does not require a parliamentary hearing.
The latest appointments also included a new vice minister Lee Jin-gyu for the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.
Lee has been promoted from within the ministry. He is known to have a strong work ethic and ability to coordinate policies.

And what else was done apart from nominating new Cabinet members?

Well, Daeun, President Moon urged the lawmakers to approve the government's 10 billion U.S. dollar supplementary budget that is stuck in limbo at the National Assembly.
He said the extra budget will not only help create new jobs and help damages caused by the ongoing severe drought but may even open up an era of economic growth in the 3 percent range.
He also urged the prime minister and ministers to make the Cabinet meeting a more lively discussion instead of the prime minister just giving orders.
Apart from that, the Cabinet meeting deliberated on 8 bills and President Moon approved them.
