WHO announces preventative vaccine for Ebola could be ready by 2015Updated: 2014-08-10 18:18:27 (KST)
A preventative vaccine for the Ebola virus could be available as early next year, as British pharma company GlaxoSmithKline prepares for clinical trials of the preparation.
The WHO announced Saturday the trials could begin as early as next month and the vaccine could be available by 2015.
There is currently no available cure or vaccine for Ebola, a virus that causes severe fever and, in the worst cases, unstoppable bleeding.
It has claimed close to 1-thousand lives in the latest epidemic to spread across West Africa this year.
Fatality rates can approach 90 percent, although the latest outbreak has killed around 55 to 60 percent of those infected.
