There has been a lot of speculation one way or the other, but a high-ranking South Korean official says the United States has NOT officially requested to deploy its missile defense system in Korea.
In an interview with Moscow-based news agency Interfax South Korea's ambassador to Russia, Wi Sung-lac said that Korea will deploy its own missile defense system, and that Washington has not asked to launch its own THAAD system on South Korean soil.
Russia voiced concerns last week about speculation the U.S. planned to deploy THAAD in Korea.
Russia's foreign ministry said such a step would "inevitably have a negative impact on the strategic situation in the region and could provoke an arms race in Northeast Asia."
