Korea-U.S. sign MOU on protecting, restoring cultural assets
South Korea and the United States are working closely to restore and prevent illegal trafficking of cultural assets.
Representatives from Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have signed their first memorandum of understanding to set framework for the exchange of information and cooperation on protecting and restituting cultural property.
The agreement comes after U.S. President Barack Obama returned nine ancient Korean royal seals upon his visit to Seoul in April.
With the agreement, Seoul is expected to retrieve traditional cultural assets shipped out of the country by the American military during the Korean War.
They include two traditional seals Seoul expects to be returned early next year.
