Pyongyang proposes the two Koreas end all cross-border slander starting July 4Updated: 2014-06-30 14:14:01 (KST)
Pyongyang has proposed that the two Koreas halt all cross-border slander and military provocations starting at midnight on July 4th.
In a so-called special proposal issued by the National Defense Commission Monday, Pyongyang said the two Koreas should put a full stop to military activities, including an upcoming annual joint military drill between Seoul and Washington.
The statement said the South should cancel the Ulji Freedom Guardian exercises that begin in August to create an amicable atmosphere before North Korea takes part in the Incheon Asian Games in September.
Experts say the proposal could be seen as an attempt by Pyongyang to demonstrate its efforts to maintain peace on the Korean Peninsula ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Seoul this week.
