"I-PIN" numbers to be used for authentication instead of ID numbers starting JulyUpdated: 2014-05-21 PM 2:07:21 (KST)
And starting July, Korean consumers will be able to use their online identification pin number in the offline world.
The Ministry of Security and Public Administration says it will introduce a new way of confirming a person's identity using so-called "i-PIN" numbers instead of resident registration numbers, which are the equivalent of social security numbers in the U.S.
The government's move comes on the heels of a revised bill regarding personal data protection that prohibits the collection and exploitation of resident registration numbers from August.
The government came under intense fire earlier this year for the country's biggest ever personal data leak.
