Osaka mayor stirs up controversy by saying comfort women were necessaryUpdated: 2014-05-14 10:18:44 (KST)
The mayor of Osaka, who caused an uproar last year by claiming Japan's use of wartime sex slaves was necessary, is once again drawing criticism by saying there was nothing wrong with his comments.
During a press conference Tuesday, Toru Hashimoto said his remarks had helped the Japanese public better understand the comfort women system.
More than 200-thousand women, mostly Korean, were forced to serve the Japanese military in army brothels during the early 20th century.
