Defense chiefs of South Korea, U.S. to work together to counter North Korea threatUpdated: 2014-04-11 03:59:20 (KST)
We begin with talks between the defense chiefs of South Korea and the United States where the two allies agreed to work hand-in-hand to counter the threat posed by North Korea.
The offices of the two officials say U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel called his South Korean counterpart Kim Kwan-jin Thursday to discuss security matters brought up during his 10-day trip to Asia.
According to a press release by the Pentagon, Hagel and Kim agreed that Pyongyang's missile and nuclear weapons pose a grave challenge to the Korean Peninsula as well as the international community.
The U.S. official also explained that the situation on the Korean peninsula prompted Washington's recent decision to send two more Aegis-equipped destroyers to Japan by 2017.
