N. Korea's denuclearization, human rights to be handled separately - U.S. envoyUpdated: 2014-03-15 20:30:07 (KST)
A top U.S. official says Washington will support UN action against North Korea for its human rights abuses highlighted in a recent UN panel report.
Robert King, the U.S. special envoy for North Korean human rights affairs, says the UN Human Rights Council will adopt a resolution next week on specific actions aimed at improving the North's human rights record.
But King added Washington will not necessarily tie the nuclear issue to efforts to improve human rights conditions in the communist state.
He says talks on human rights and the nuclear issue need not be linked.
