New York Senate's judiciary committee passes 'East Sea' billUpdated: 2014-03-13 18:04:56 (KST)
The U.S. state of New York is inching closer to using the name "East Sea" for the body of water between Korea and Japan.
A Korean-American community group there says the New York state senate's judiciary committee passed a bill Tuesday requiring that both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" be used in all school textbooks published after July 1st.
The legislation will take effect if it is passed by both state houses and signed by the governor.
A similar bill was passed by lawmakers in Virginia last month and is awaiting the governor's approval.
