President Park Geun-hye has ordered her government to ensure the nation's broadcasting industry is not monopolized by large enterprises.
Speaking during a status report by the ICT Ministry and the Korea Communications Commission on Monday, the president pointed out that small and mid-sized companies are losing their share of the broadcasting market.
She said this is because conglomerates have started expanding their influence in the industry by increasing the number of TV channels they own.
She expressed concern that such a trend could be detrimental to broadcasting content and decrease variety.
The president urged officials to come up with balanced policies, as the broadcasting and communications services sector has a great influence on the economy and people's daily lives.
