Korean government issues special pardons for nearly 6,000 minor offenders ahead of Lunar New YearUpdated: 2014-01-29 03:53:39 (KST)
President Park Geun-hye has made sparse use of presidential pardons since taking office but she decided to issue her first set this week.
But they're only for people who committed minor crimes related to trying to make a living.
A total of 5,9-hundred-25 people were pardoned ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which starts Thursday.
In addition, about 2.9 million traffic violators will be exempted from their penalties, however, the list of beneficiaries will not include people caught driving under the influence.
Prominent politicians, businessmen and offenders of violent crimes will also be excluded from the list of those pardoned.
Korean presidents traditionally issue pardons to commemorate major national holidays.
