Archbishop Andrew Yeom Soo-jung will become the third ever Korean to be appointed as cardinal, following Stephen Kim Sou-hwan and Nicolas Cheong Jin-suk .
Yeom is one of the 19 new cardinals Pope Francis named on Sunday at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
The 70-year-old was ordained as priest in 1970 and was appointed as the fourteenth Catholic Archbishop of Seoul in 2012 by Pope Benedict.
He is currently the de facto leader of the Korean Catholic Church.
The bishop and 18 other churchmen will be officially appointed as cardinals on February 22nd at the Vatican.
