The floor leader of Korea's main opposition Democratic Party has proposed setting up a special parliamentary committee to discuss amending the Constitution, which was last revised in 1987.
Jun Byung-hun asked National Assembly Speaker Kang Chang-hee Tuesday for his support in kick-starting a parliamentary discussion on improving the presidential system and amending outdated constitutional provisions.
This, after President Park on Monday said talks on the amendment could further delay other important issues.
Kang agreed to launch an advisory committee soon and have it submit a proposal for amending the constitution.
Jun also proposed holding an inter-Korean parliamentary meeting as a means of boosting cooperation and stability on the Korean peninsula.
