Suspected suicide bomber kills 16 in RussiaUpdated: 2013-12-30 AM 3:13:40 (KST)
Security has been stepped up at train stations and airports around Russia after a female suicide bomber attacked Volgograd train station, killing 16 people and injuring scores more.
Russian investigators say the bomber detonated her explosives in front of a metal detector just inside the main entrance of the station that was bustling with holiday travelers.
This is the second such attack in the same city in recent months following a bus bombing in October that killed eight including the Islamist attacker.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.. but Volgograd lies just above the volatile Caucasus region, where Islamist terrorists have carried out dozens of suicide attacks in recent years.
Volgograd is also only a few hundred kilometers northeast of Sochi -- raising security concerns ahead of the Winter Olympics kicking off in just two months.
