Korea to start testing 5G mobile technology in 2018Updated: 2013-12-19 (KST)
Only a fifth of the global population now has access to the latest mobile network technology, 4G LTE, but Korea is already gearing up to introduce the next-generation mobile technology -- 5G.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning on Tuesday announced plans to test the 5G network starting in 2018, with the goal of launching the service by 2020.
The 5G wireless network will allow mobile phones to transmit data a thousand times faster than the current 4G LTE.
With the breakthrough technology, Korea is aiming to overtake the U.S. and rise to first place in terms of mobile patent competitiveness.
Korea already tops the list in terms of revenue from its mobile services.
Strategy Analytics said Korea saw its mobile revenue grow by 4-percent during the July to September period,.. while that of U.S. grew by 3-percent and Japan by one-percent.
The market researcher attributed Korea's rapid revenue growth to the increasing number of people switching to 4G mobile phones.
