Ukraine still intends to sign trade deal with EU - AshtonUpdated: 2013-12-13 (KST)
The European Union's top foreign policy official says Ukraine still intends to sign an association pact with the EU.
Catherine Ashton says Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich assured her earlier this week that he wants to seal a deal which will allow closer ties with the EU.
Ukraine has been in turmoil for weeks after Yanukovich decided to postpone a free trade agreement with the EU in favor of closer economic ties with Moscow.
A delegation from Kiev has left for Brussels to resume dialogue with the 28-member regional bloc.
In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the door was always open for Ukraine to integrate its economy more closely with Russia.
Putin has been trying for years to persuade Ukraine to join a Moscow-led customs union whose membership so far includes Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus.
