Yanukovich ignores protesters, calls for stronger ties with RussiaUpdated: 2013-12-11 (KST)
Thousands of pro-Europe demonstrators are continuing to camp out in the freezing cold in Kiev's Independence Square, but Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovich has yet again insisted that his government needs to deepen trade ties with Russia.
In his first major appearance since the demonstrations began last week, the president ignored the demands of protesters saying Ukraine cannot talk about the future without talking about restoring solid trade relations with Moscow.
The opposition is up in arms over his decision to scrap a landmark pact with the EU in favor of closer ties with Russia.
Yanukovich's comments came on the same day as U.S. assistant secretary of state Victoria Nuland and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton visited Kiev for talks with officials.
