Korean company develops new form of plastic
Korean conglomerate Hyosung Group has developed a new kind of high performance thermoplastic polymer called polyketone.
This new plastic shows great resistance to chemicals and heat.
When tested for its strength to acidic solvents, the original plastic melted while the new plastic showed no signs of deformation.
This dream material was also able to hold oil bubbling away at over 200 degrees Celsius.
"This high performance material is a new form of plastic which can be used as a substitute for nylon."
As the new plastic shows great chemical resistance, it is expected to be used in various value-added industrial products, such as automobiles and plastic fibers.
"This new plastic has great strength and durability so it has a great deal of potential."
Hyosung Group has invested nearly 50 million U.S. dollars over the past ten years developing and commercializing this dream material.
The company started mass production last month and plans to produce 50-thousand tons annually by 2015.
