October by-elections take place Wednesday to elect two new lawmakers
Wednesday is an election day for two parts of the nation today with vacant parliamentary seats.
Both regions, the Hwaseong-A District in Gyeonggi Province and the South Pohang-Ulleung Island district in North Gyeongsang Province, are considered traditional strongholds of the ruling Saenuri Party.
The outcome of today's elections, though small in scale, is expected to reflect public sentiment about a major election scandal surrounding the spy agency, which has widened into a debate about the legitimacy of last year's presidential election.
The polls will close at 8 p.m. and preliminary results should emerge at around 10 p.m.
As of 5 p.m., the voter turnout stood at 27 percent in Hwaseong-A and 29 percent in South Pohang-Ulleung.
We will bring you the outcome of the elections in our later newscasts.
