Navy chief: 3 more Aegis destroyers to be deployed before 2022
The Korean navy is hoping to push up the timeline for the procurement of three Aegis destroyers, previously scheduled for the year 2020.
During a parliamentary audit at the Navy Headquarters earlier this Wednesday, Navy Chief of Staff Hwang Ki-chul expressed confidence that the new timeline was feasible, and that the nation would be able to deploy three additional KDX-3 Aegis ships before the year 2022.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff is set to discuss the details of building the destroyers next month, upon the request of the navy.
When asked about the biggest challenge the navy faces, Hwang pointed to insufficient naval manpower stressing the need to increase the number of sailors, which is currently fixed at 41-thousand.
