Military launches full-fledged investigation into cyber unit smear campaign
The Defense Ministry has just announced the initial results of its investigation into allegations that its Cyber Warfare Command carried out a smear campaign on the internet last year.
The ministry officials' tentative conclusion is that the four cyber unit members in question, all of whom are accused of having posted statements online in favor of the ruling party ahead of last year's presidential election, were expressing their personal thoughts, and were not given an order from the top.
The ministry said, however, it has launched a full-fledged investigation into the case in order to reveal the truth regarding allegations that the smear campaign was organized based on orders from higher up.
This afternoon, investigators carried out a search and seizure operation at the offices of the cyber command, combing through personal computers and documents.
Some 70 to 80 other cyber command members are expected to be called in for questioning in the coming days.
