President Park stresses need for 2nd new community movement
President Park Geun-hye has emphasized the importance of starting a second nationwide new community movement to better unite the country.
Visiting Suncheon City in South Jeolla Province Sunday, President Park said the new community movement, known as "Saemaul Undong," should be revised to fit the present time in reducing disparity between urban and rural areas, as well as among different age groups and social classes.
The first community movement was an initiative launched in 1970 by President Park Chung-hee , the current president's father, to modernize the rural Korean economy.
President Park Geun-hye said she will also promote the initiative as a major international cooperative project, offering hope to many countries in the developing world.
