Pres. Obama scraps trip to Asia as shutdown continues
With the U.S. government shutdown stretching into a second day and with no end in sight yet, President Barack Obama has cancelled a scheduled trip to Asia.
Obama was set to visit four Asian countries, including the Philippines and Malaysia, to reinforce Washington's commitment to the region.
This is the first international consequence of the shutdown that took effect at midnight on Monday.
In the meantime, an intelligence official said on Wednesday that the shutdown is threatening intelligence operations that protect the security of the U.S.
Around 800-thousand federal employees are currently out of work, and hundreds of landmarks and national parks have been closed.
