International inspectors arrive in Syria to oversee destruction of chemical arsenal
The mission to dismantle Syria's chemical weapons stockpile has begun with the arrival in Damascus of a group of international inspectors.
The inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will have just nine months to oversee the destruction of an estimated one, tons of chemical agents and pre-cursor chemicals.
Their first priority is to help Syria scrap its ability to manufacture chemical weapons by the November 1st deadline, but this could prove extremely difficult as almost half of the sites declared by the government are in combat areas.
All of Syria's chemical material is supposed to be disposed of by the middle of next year.
