Angela Merkel wins third term as German Chancellor, but no absolute majority
Angela Merkel has won a third term as German Chancellor after her Christian Democrat party polled strongly in Sunday's general elections.
Merkel urged her party to celebrate what she called a "super result" as preliminary official results show her Christian Democrats and its Bavarian sister party won 41-and-a-half percent of the vote.
But Merkel will be forced to seek a grand coalition with the center-left Social Democrats since her Free Democrat partner secured less than the five percent of votes needed to enter parliament.
The Social Democrats won 25.7 percent of the votes and the Greens 8.4 percent.
