Former president Chun Doo-hwan to voluntarily pay remaining fines: reports
Reports are emerging that former Korean president Chun Doo-hwan, who for years has refused to cough up tens of millions of dollars he owes the country in fines for corruption, will pay back a significant slice of the remaining amount.
Local media say Chun's second eldest son, Jae-yong during questioning Tuesday said his family decided to voluntarily pay off up to 91 million U.S. dollars of the unpaid fines.
Despite being a huge amount of money, it's only part of the 152 million dollars left to be paid by the former dictator, after he was ordered in 1997 to return 200 million dollars of illegal funds amassed during his presidency.
Following his questioning, however, Chun Jae-yong declined to elaborate, only to say the family will soon make a formal announcement regarding the matter.
