 S. Korea to increase defense spending by $200 million this year
South Korea's Defense Ministry plans to spend an additional 200-million U.S. dollars this year in light of renewed nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.
The ministry announced Tuesday the defense budget for 2013 will be expanded from the current 30.5 billion dollars to slightly more than 30.7 billion, an increase of zero.seven percent.
An extra 1-hundred million dollars will be spent to fortify the strategic defense capability along the western maritime border, an area most vulnerable to small-scale attacks from the North.
Another 88 million dollars will be allocated to upgrading South Korea's weaponry, including its K-9 self-propelled howitzers and mid-altitude unmanned reconnaissance aircraft.
