Yeonpyeong Island

  Yeonpyeong Island

With tensions on high, President Park Geun-hye has called on the South Korean government to ensure the safety of the people, especially those living on Yeonpyeong Island-- which in 2010 suffered the most recent attack from North Korea and those at the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

Let's find out more about the current situation in those two areas and elsewhere around the country by connecting live to our Lee Ji-yoon standing by at the Arirang News Center.
So Ji-yoon, what's the atmosphere like over on Yeonpyeong Island?

Hey guys.
So the latest reports coming from Yeonpyeong Island tell us that, although there was a bit of nervousness there, residents carried on with their daily lives on Monday.
The waters around Yeonpyeong Island are rich with blue crabs, and many of the fishermen were seen running their crab boats or tending fish traps earlier in the day.
All schools on the island were also business as usual.
However,. the island is on high alert and prepared for any kind of emergency.
Residents spent the day constantly checking the news,. and the township office opened 13 of the island's evacuation shelters, taking stock of commodities.
And after the sunset, the island of Yeonpyeong fell silent as residents rushed back to their homes.
They have been warned to be ready to evacuate if they hear any sounds of shelling.
