Pres. Lee: Too Early to Talk About Nuclear Possession

Pres. Lee: Too Early to Talk About Nuclear Possession

Should South Korea, in the face of growing threats posed by the North, bring back tactical nuclear weapons to the nation?
President Lee Myung-bak doesn't think so.

In an interview with one of Korea's major dailies, the Donga Ilbo this Friday the outgoing president said it's inappropriate and too early for the South Korean government to be talking about developing nuclear weapons.

He stressed he understands the reasoning behind the arguments, at a time when North Korea's nuclear program is making strides, but said the ultimate goal is to persuade Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

President Lee also said that Seoul and Beijing see eye-to-eye on the need for the United States to maintain a military presence south of the military demarcation line, should the two Koreas reunify, instead of being stationed in the North.
