Korean Artists Welfare Foundation Opens its DoorsUpdated: 2012-11-22 12:00:00 (KST)
Local artists will get some extra support through a new organization that opened its doors on Thursday.
The Korean Artists Welfare Foundation opened with a ceremony attended by some of the nation's most prominent cultural leaders.
The foundation was established following the passage of a law on artists' welfare in 2011 that was prompted by the tragic death of a young screenwriter.
The young woman was unable to support herself and died of illness and starvation sending a shock wave through the artistic community.
The organization plans to provide grants to over 24-hundred local artists next year and will have a budget of 7 billion won, or roughly 6.4 million U.S. dollars.
In addition to providing financial support, the organization will also provide artists with services such as assistance with obtaining worker's compensation insurance and other kinds of consultation services.
