President Lee Myung-bak on Friday celebrated the groundbreaking of a new high-speed railway that will significantly reduce travel time from Incheon International Airport to the venue of the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The new tracks will link Wonju, about 90 kilometers southeast of Seoul, to the eastern coastal city of Gangneung via Pyeongchang the host city of the 2018 Winter Games.
The lines will be connected to the existing railways linking Seoul and Incheon.
The trains that run at speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, meaning athletes and tourists will be able to go from the airport to the Pyeongchang in just one hour and a half as opposed to the previous five-plus hours it took.
Construction will be completed in 2017 before the 2018 Winter Olympics.
