U.S. Says No Need to Redeploy Nukes to Korean Peninsula
A U.S. military official says there's no need to redeploy nuclear weapons to the Korean Peninsula.
Speaking to Seoul-based Yonhap News Monday, the source said that even though the Republican-controlled U.S. House Armed Services Committee passed a bill last week supporting the redeployment of tactical nuclear weapons to South Korea, the Obama administration wants to see a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
U.S. State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland also made clear on Monday that there will be no change in Washington's policy when it comes to deploying nuclear weapons to the region.
The U.S. pulled its tactical nuclear weapons out of South Korea in September 1991 after it signed a deal with Russia to reduce the use of such weapons.
