Fares on Seoul's Subway line Number 9 are going up by 500 won on June 16th if its private owners get their way.
The private group that owns the line, the only private subway line in Seoul,.. says it will increase the current base fare of 1,050 to 1,550 won to meet rising operating expenses.
Subway riders using electronic travel cards should expect to pay the additional 500 won, while travelers paying cash will pay an additional 100 won on top of that.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has contested the proposed fare hike, decrying it as both unacceptable and "technically impossible" unless the city facilitates the increase.
But Subway Metro Line 9 Corporation is remaining adamant, saying that its current 180 billion won or 160 million U.S. dollar deficit accumulated since it began operating in 2009 is unsustainable.
