Seoul Mayor Says Kim's Death Could Serve As Chance to Better Inter-Korean Ties
Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon expressed regret that the South Korean government has not allowed local governments to express condolences to North Korea.
During his one-on-one with Lee Hee-ho , the widow of late South Korean President Kim Dae-jung who is slated to visit Pyeongyang for condolence calls Monday Park said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's death could serve as a chance to shift inter-Korean relations.
He relayed his hope to host Seoul-Pyeongyang soccer matches and launch exchange programs for symphony orchestras but said that they are impossible due to the ongoing tensions between the two Koreas.
A day after Kim's death South Korea issued a government statement expressing sympathy to the North Korean people but announced its decision not to send an official government delegation.
